Today we have a moving and inspiring interview with Robert A. Bernstein, author of Families of Value: Personal Profiles of Pioneering Lesbian and Gay Parents. This wonderful book is described like this by Booklist:

This wonderful book is described like this by Booklist:

With gay marriage in the news, attention has turned to gay parents. Bernstein, author of Straight Parents, Gay Children (1995), here portrays the gay and lesbian parents whose intimate lives he explores as pioneers fighting a cultural battle to change society. Growing numbers of children are raised in gay and lesbian households, he says, with hard-to-access statistics ranging from 1 to 14 million. The family stories he tells embrace a religiously conservative Protestant minister who is the gay father of two, a pair of lesbian policewomen who battled for extension of police death benefits, and a 12-year-old who, renouncing his lesbian mom’s Quaker pacifism, beats up a boy who calls her a “lezzie.” While some stories demonstrate the silver linings of storm clouds, one woman objects that the media light shone on gay families is too often rosy: she recalls a childhood spent in terror of being taken from her gay dad and his partner and of fearing their house would be torched. A strong addition to sociology and gender studies collections.

We also cover the news of the day and the news of my family!

January 14, 2007: Today I talk to Jen Chrisler, the wonderful, articulate and passionate executive director of The Family Pride Coalition.

We chat about Mary Cheney (of course), and I make a strong pitch for you to support Family Pride. They do such wonderful work – will you consider making them a part of your giving in 2007?

Speaking of giving, I mention on the show a relevant article in the NY Times about what makes people happy. Here’s an interesting quote:

Positive psychology brings the same attention to positive emotions (happiness, pleasure, well-being) that clinical psychology has always paid to the negative ones (depression, anger, resentment). Psychoanalysis once promised to turn acute human misery into ordinary suffering; positive psychology promises to take mild human pleasure and turn it into a profound state of well-being. “Under certain circumstances, people — they’re not desperate or in misery — they start to wonder what’s the best thing life can offer,” says Martin Seligman, one of the field’s founders, who heads the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. Thus positive psychology is not only about maximizing personal happiness but also about embracing civic engagement and spiritual connectedness, hope and charity. “Aristotle taught us virtue isn’t virtue unless you choose it,” Seligman says.

See? Giving to Family Pride will make you happy!

And while you’re at it, don‘t forget to contribute to the nation’s largest LGBT organization, HRC. They do so much for our community; let’s do for them, too.

Thanks to HRC for their sponsorship and, as always, thank you for listening.

June 27, 2006: In this week’s show I interview Pamela Madsen, executive director of the American Fertility Association. The AFA is doing great work opening their doors to LGBT people interested in becoming parents. They’ve produced a very helpful pamphlet for same sex families called Two Dads, Two Moms: Insights on Gay and Lesbian Family Building, which you can find here.

But before we talk to Pam, we have an interview with another very special guest star – my son Sasha. I thought you’d all like to hear what’s on his six-year-old mind. I couldn’t be prouder of the little guy.

Sasha confesses to his love of musicals (hey, he is his father’s son) and waxes philosophically on videogames and his upcoming birthday. It’s fascinating listening – at least for his dad.

I also talk about a recent study that finds some more evidence that homosexuality is biologically determined, and an article in the SF Chronicle that describes the present moment as a critical time for our movement.

June 10, 2006: Ellen Kahn, director of HRC’s Family Project (and we’d love Ellen even if HRC wasn’t our official non-profit sponsor- thanks HRC!) brings us a terrific interview today with a gay man who has provided foster care to 14 children. You’ll love hearing Dennis Patrick’s heart-warming and inspirational story.

Before that, I give you an update on what’s happening with our foster child (whom we hope to provide a permanent home to should he become adoptable). I had to testify in court last week for the hearing to terminate the parental rights of his mother. It was a difficult experience, but one that you may be interested in hearing about.

I also rant a little bit about the federal Marriage Protection Amendment and read a hilarious excerpt from FUBAR: America’s Right-Wing Nightmare about the true cause of homophobia. Warning – it involves erections!

Thanks to HRC for their sponsorship and thanks to you for listening.

May 24, 2006: Today we have a terrific interview with Dana from Mombian, a great resource for lesbian moms (lesbian+mom=Mombian. Get it?). Although, as a gay dad, I also love the site, and I recommend everyone check it out.

Dana has a great idea to make June 1st Blogging for LGBT Families Day. Listen to her ideas on the show for how to help promote our families using the power of the web.

In our coverage of the news, I talk about the recent overturning of an anti-family law in Oklahoma, and the new report on the high cost of the LGBT adoption ban in Florida.

I also give an update on our family, including my nervousness about testifying in our foster child’s custody case. It will be my first time on the stand. Will I break down? Will I stutter? Wish me luck!

Thanks to HRC for their sponsorship and thanks to you for listening.

May 4, 2006: Today we have a great interview conducted by Ellen Kahn, director of HRC’s Family Project, with Rachel Smith-Mosel, a mom who’s taking a stand in her own community. It’s inspiring listening!

I also talk about my own family’s upcoming move, how our son is taking it, and the news of the day – including my rebuttal to an Advocate editorial that criticized the Lorganized GBT presence at the White House Easter Egg Roll.

As I explain in the show, I’m currently on a low-carb diet that seems to be having a very negative effect on my cognitive functioning, so please excuse me if this isn’t my most coherent podcast!

Thanks to HRC for their sponsorship and thanks to you for listening.

February 18, 2006: Today we talk to the woman at the center of an exciting proposal to bring our families to the White House Lawn.

Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Pride Coalition, has been working with other groups to encourage LGBT families to come to Washington for this year’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the White House Lawn, which is traditionally open to the public and always draws national media attention. Already, more than 100 LGBT families have said they will be coming, some from as far away as California.

Jen talks to us today about what the event is all about, and why it has some conservatives so riled up. Why are they so afraid of our families being part of a cherished American tradition? She’ll tell you all about it.

Also today we have our first ever audio message from a listener. Chip Chipman, who has his own podcast, calls in to ask how he should come out to his five and seven year old sons. I give him my best answer, but I bet you can do as well, if not better. Why not listen and shoot him an email, or leave a message for Chip in the Comments section below? I’m sure he’d appreciate your help.

I also talk about the recent bad news from Florida (boy, does that state SUCK) and the recent bad news in my house (two kids, both vomiting, simultaneously. Ugh!).

Thanks for joining, and please take a moment to leave me your thoughts. Your feedback is the only “payment” I receive for this show – please let me know what you think.

January 15, 2006: Today’s show features a terrific interview with Dr. Kim Bergman about how to talk to your kids about homosexuality.

It’s your responsibility to help form your child’s sense of him or herself and his or her family. What have you told your kids about his or her family? And how has your unconscious internalized homophobia been communicated to your child?

On today’s show, Dr. Kim Bergman of Growing Generations tells us how to communicate the beautiful truth of your family to your children. As she explains, we don’t freak out when our kids say they want a pony. So why do we panic when they say they want a mom (or a dad)?
Listen up and hear Dr. Bergman’s excellent advice.

Also, I talk about my family, including an update on our foster child and my son’s exciting half-birthday.

And, as always, we cover the news of the day as it affects gay famlies.

Thanks for listening, and please leave feedback and let me know what you think.

December 4, 2005: Whether you’ve got a big mouth (like me) or are the shy, retiring type, its time for you to speak out for our families!

Luckily, the Family Pride Coalition will show you how, by empowering you through their OutSpoken Families campaign. On today’s show, I talk to Family Pride’s Executive Director Jennifer Chrisler about their new project that helps us speak out against prejudice and for a better world for our children.

Jen tell us that 51% of us don’t talk to our families and friends about our lives! Let’s get on the ball, people! The only way we’ll ever make progress is if we make allies out of the people in our lives! But they advocate for us if they don’t know the barriers we face.

In addition to getting to hear Jen’s expertise, you’ll also hear the unbelievably unprofessional interruption she has to suffer when I get a call from daycare during our interview. Bet that never happens to the guests on the Larry King Show. Yes, this is truly citizen media, warts and all.

I also give you some updates on our family, our foster child, and my partner’s new job with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

I even tell you how to score some free formula for your baby. That’s a good deal because that stuff is expensive!

Thanks as always to Motorola for their sponsorship and to Skylook for the software I use to record my interviews.

And thank you for joining us! Please be sure to send me or post your feedback. Enjoy the show! Like Natalie Cole says, I live for your love.

November 14, 2005: Interested in having kids? The theme of today’s show is how to add to your family through surrogacy and foster care; two of the many options open to LGBT parents.

First, I talk about my family’s recent experience with foster care. We started the process a few weeks ago, and we already have a child in our home.

We had a lot of fears about foster care before we entered the system. Would it take forever? Is it a bureaucratic nightmare? Are the kids alright? You’ll find out how the realities compare to the stereotypes in the first half of today’s show.

In the second half, we talk to Will Halm, co-found of Growing Generations, the largest surrogacy agency in the world. Will has helped hundreds of LGBT people become parents.

Surrogacy is a misunderstood process, and I learned a lot talking to Will. Listen and see if surrogacy might be for you.

October 29, 2005: Today’s Gay Parenting Show gives you the chance to WIN a wonderful prize basket for you and your kids. This opportunity is brought to you by Family Evolutions, a great source for clothing and gifts for your LGBT family. Listen to my interview with Stacey Harris, co-found and co-owner of FE to learn how you can enter the contest to win funny, empowering T-shirts for your family.

In the second half of today’s show, Stacey and I talk about how her company came to be. We discuss some of the clever, funny T-shirts her company offers, and how one of the designs, “My Daddy’s Name is Donor,” got her in trouble with conservative websites and commentators. I bet you’ll love listening to Stacey as much as I loved talking to her.

And be sure to email me your contest entries by November 25th, 2005.

But first, you’ll hear me rant about how my partner and I rented tuxedos for my family for a special event, and I almost lost my mind when my son’s turned out to be the wrong size…and we didn’t have enough time to exchange it! There are probably people whose child gets the wrong kidney who don’t make the fuss I did. Ah, the joys of parenting.

Two weeks ago, my family suffered a terrible loss when a baby who was living with us for 18 days was taken from our house when the birth mother changed her mind about the adoption. This week, I’ll tell you about how we’re moving forward on building our family.

I also read a letter from The Family Pride Coalition. The letter reminds us what a precarious time we are at in history. Did you know that twelve states are preparing to introduce constitutional amendments that would prevent LGBT persons from adopting children? Yes, after turning out the conservative vote by scaring people about gay marriage, the same evil folks are planning to use gay parenting as the next wedge issue to motivate their base and to further divide our country. And demonizing our families is a price they are only too willing to pay to accomplish their reactionary ends.

Thanks to Motorola for sponsoring all the shows on The Podcast Network, and to Skylook for the software I used to prepare today’s show.

And, as always, thanks to you for joining us.

October 23, 2005: Author, columnist and activist Dan Savage joins me for Show #10 with his perceptive takes on family, parenting, and equal marriage. Dan talks about his wonderful new book, The Commitment, which you’ll definitely want to check out after hearing his engaging interview. We chat about his reasons for getting married, despite the initial reluctance of his six-year-old son, who was convinced that two men getting married was tragically icky

As Dan says in the show, every child born or adopted into a loving lesbian or gay couple is a wanted child. “Two gay guys never got drunk and adopted a baby. ”

You’ll also hear why Dan asks if I wear briefs or boxers (it’s not what you think), and what he used to get teased about in school –wanna guess?

Today’s show also tells you how you can win an autographed copy of Arlene Istar Lev’s The Complete Lesbian and Gay Parenting Guide, her comprehensive guide to building and protecting your family. I had wanted to have a drawing for the book, but it turns out that a drawing is a “game of chance” that is illegal in many areas.

So, we’re gonna have a competition. Hundreds of LGBT parents download the show every week, but there are millions of us out there. I need your ideas to help me build the show’s community. So here’s the competition — email your best ideas on how I can promote The Gay Parenting Show to me and I’ll pick the best one (or at least the one which most appeals to me at that moment), as the winner of Arlene’s book. I’ll pick the winner sometime around the middle of November.

Listen to the podcast to hear more details about what constitutes a “best idea” on how to promote the show (here’s a hint – think cheap) and how you can win this autographed book.

Also, will you tell me if you like the idea of winning free stuff through the show? I have some other people who’d like to give you a chance to score some fabulous LGBT parenting goodness, so let me know if you’re into the opportunity.

I also talk about a new way you can find and listen to podcasts through Yahoo Music. You can also review podcasts at the site – maybe you could send some love to The Gay Parenting Show? I sure would appreciate it.

In the news, I cover a recent studies that show that equal marriage helps children, and that LGBT parents are at least as good as straights.

So, please give a listen, and be sure to let me know you what you thought of the show by clicking on the “comments” link below. As always, thanks for joining us.

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

October 15, 2005: Today’s show is a sad one, as I talk about the termination of our recent adoption. After the baby was home with us for 18 days, the birth mother reversed her decision, and the baby was taken away. It was an awful time for me, my partner, and our other son.

I truly believe that parenting is great, but becoming a parent isn’t always easy. Today’s show looks at one of the most painful experiences that can happen on the road to building a family. But I think it’s important that we share with each other not only the good times, but the hard times as well. Hopefully, our story will help others better understand the adoption process, and be better prepared for some of the potential pitfalls.

In the second half of the show, I talk about the adoption with Molly Carlile, a great person who is an Accredited Grief and Bereavement Counsellor. Molly has a podcast called Dead Serious (like mine, also on The Podcast Network). She helps me understand where I am in the grieving process, and how to move forward. I think her words will be helpful to anyone who struggles with how to deal with a traumatic loss – which is to say, everyone.

But even in the dark times there is always light. I am mindful that what happened to us isn’t the worst thing that can happen to someone, and everyday I count my blessings.

Good people and friends are some of those blessings. I want to thank everyone who read about the adoption and who posted messages of support on my show’s blog. They mean so much to me.

Speaking of the show, this week’s is the first ever to be sponsored by Motorola. Kudos to them for sponsoring all of the shows on The Podcast Network, including this one. “The Gay Parenting Show – brought to you by Motorola.” How cool is that?

I also have to thank the makers of Skylook, a program which integrates Skype and Microsoft Outlook, which I used to record my interview with Molly.

Lastly, this week I had hoped to offer our first drawing. The wonderful author Arlene Istar Lev has donated a copy of her book, The Complete Lesbian and Gay Parenting Guide, to a listener of the show. Arlene was a guest on the first episode of The Gay Parenting Show (download it now if you haven’t already – Arlene’s a delight!). Thanks Arlene for your continued support. Oh, and she was going to autograph it for you, too.

However, it turns out that I am legally prohibited from having a “drawing.” In some countries where this show airs, a drawing is considered a “game of chance” and it’s against the law. So, I’ll have to think of another way to make this available to you. Stay tuned.

By the way - I found out I couldn’t have the drawing AFTER I posted today’s show. So, I had to go back into the file and cut out all the references to it. I say this just in case I missed one, or in case you hear an odd cut.

Hopefully, I’ll never have reason to record another show as sad at this one. Next week, we’ll return to our usual happier mix of news and interviews. If all goes as scheduled, we’ll also have a very special guest on. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, please continue to post your comments here and let me know your feedback. Thanks for being there.

September 6, 2005: If you haven’t listened to the show yet, THIS IS THE ONE TO HEAR, as I feature a great interview with the executive director of The Family Pride Coalition.

It’s a bit of shorty today because I’m under the weather. And when I say “under the weather” I mean “if I take one more Dayquil my head is going to explode!” Ugh.

I talk a little bit about what’s going on in my household, most notably, Sasha’s starting Kindergarten. He did great but I was a wreck!

The bulk of the show, though, is devoted to an interview with Jennifer Chrisler, the newly installed executive director of The Family Pride Coalition (FPC).

As they say on their website “The Family Pride Coalition (FPC) has for 25 years been the only national non-profit organization solely dedicated to equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents and their families. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., FPC supports nearly 200 membership-based LGBT parenting groups nationwide with a base of 35,000 supporters.”

Jen is absolutely terrific, and we have a great conversation about Family Pride’s new research initiative Real Families, Real Facts, as well as the new Outspoken Families Project. Jen explains why we must arm ourselves with the FACTs about our families, so we counter statements like this (which was actually made on national TV) “We know as a fact that children raised in LGBT families are 11 times more likely to be sexually molested.”

Also, I have to apologize – the sound quality on Jen’s interview has some drop offs and other problems. For some reason, we couldn’t get a good connection. Still, what she had to say was so valuable I hope you’ll suffer through the occasional hiccup. The sound actually gets better as the interview goes on, so please hang in there!

Today’s Action Alert is to visit – where else? – The Family Pride Coalition. I also encourage you to join Family Pride for at least a basic membership – for less than your family’s basic cable bill, you’ll know you’re helping support a vital resource for your children.

Thanks for listening. Hope to see you again next week!

August 28, 2005: Hi, and welcome to the seventh episode of The Gay Parenting Show.

Today, I talk about an important court ruling in California that ensured that gay parents have not just the same rights, but the same responsibilities, as straight parents.

I also give out information about the 2005 Pride and Joy Conference to be held November 11-13 in Binghamton, NY. The conference features workshops for parents and prospective parents, creative children’s programs for ages 6 mos. and up, a resource fair, off-site family outings and entertainment and a Family Dance. It sounds like a great event.

Lastly, I talk with my old friend, Michael Rogers. Mike runs PageOneQ News, a fantastic LGBT resource on the web. PageOneQ is a news aggregator and everyday Michael posts summaries and links to the world’s top stories that affect LGBT people and their families.

Michael and I talk about Focus on Your Child, a subgroup of the right-wing religious group Focus on the Family. FOYC publishes lists of advice for parents who are worried about their artistic, sensitive sons or athletic, adventurous daughters. Could these children be headed for (insert dramatic pause) homosexuality? According to FOYC, you bet your sweet ass they are!

But luckily, FOYC is there with the tips and tools to turn your child back to the path of heterosexuality. Or, as FOYC so charmingly puts it on one of their web pages: “Helping Boys Become Men, and Girls Become Women - How to Prevent Homosexuality.”

According those these wackos “growing up straight isn’t something that happens. It requires good parenting. It requires societal support. And it takes time.” Who knew heterosexuality had to be taught? (As Michael suggests on this week’s show, we must have been absent when those lessons were covered in school.)

These people want parents to pervert their children’s natural instincts to conform to their conservative ideas of “appropriate” behavior. If your little girl wants to play with toy soldiers - take her to a “counselor.” If your little boy likes to play dress up - wrestle with him to toughen him up. These people are sick. Come listen as Michael and I dissect their attacks on children.

The conference features workshops for parents and prospective parents, creative children's programs for ages 6 mos. and up, a resource fair, off-site family outings and entertainment and a Family Dance.

August 21, 2005: Today’s show features a great interview with Mark Brown, of The Pop Luck Club. As they say on their web site (and why paraphrase when you can cut and paste?) “The Pop Luck Club is a Los Angeles-based organization of gay dads that is the largest known gay fathers organization in the world, with hundreds of families and continued strong growth. Its mission is to advance the well-being of gay prospective parents, gay parents, and their children. We do this through mutual support, community collaboration, and public understanding.”

Mark’s a very interesting and entertaining fellow, and I really enjoyed our chat. We talked about what the Pop Luck Club does and how you can start a similiar resource in your community. We also gab about our kids, and eventually work our way around to my favorite topic…why gay people are better parents than straights. :)

I also do my usual ranting - this week about coming out my son’s Kindergarten orientation and about the Boston Globe article that asks “What Makes People Gay?”

My son was feeling especially clingy today, so at the end you’ll hear him join me for my goodbye. I even ask him to say the website address. Can he do it? Tune in and find out!

And, as always, thanks for all your kind feedback. Please continue to let me know you’re out there.
