November 20, 2005: Author and commentator Dan Savage, who has been a guest on The Gay Parenting Show, recently had an Op Ed in the NY Times calling for a Constitutional Amendment on the right to privacy.

We love the right to privacy because we believe adults should have access to birth control, abortion services and pornography as well as the right to engage in gay sex. Social conservatives hate the right to privacy for the very same reason, as they seek to regulate private behaviors from access to birth control to masturbation. (Think I’m kidding about masturbation? In Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent in Lawrence v. Texas, he wrote that the majority’s decision called into question the legality of state laws against “masturbation, adultery, fornication.”)

As Savage says, “If the Republicans can propose a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, why can’t the Democrats propose a right to privacy amendment? ”

As always, Savage is spot on. If you want to read his whole Op Ed (and you should), click here.

September 13, 2005: There’s a new place to find all your podcasting goodness. Yahoo has launched a new podcast directory that helps you find and subscribe to the podcasts of your choice.

It works like iTunes, but you don’t need an iPod to use it. The software intergrates with their Yahoo Music Engine, of which I am a big fan. The Yahoo music service is kind of like Napster, which offers all the music you can download for a set price each month. Napster’s service costs about $15 a month, but Yahoo’s is only $5 a month! I use it all the time, especially to listen to those albums I really want to hear, but wouldn’t be caught dead buying (hi Lindsay Lohan!). The software also allows me to synch my “rented” music to my Pocket PC for music on-the-go.

Of course, you can use their music engine to listen to all your MP3 and WMAs without paying anything. Subscribing and listening to podcasts for is also free. So sample widely -there’s a lot of good stuff out there!

You can also rate and review podcasts, so please feel free to send us some love.

“I was very disappointed to discover that the carrier of your podcast
(thepodcastnetwork) had a show entitled “The Gay Parenting Show.” I
cannot support a network that supports “Gay Parenting.” Especially when
they are so blatant about it (see this weeks blog entry). I would love
to be able to listen to your show, (which has replaced TV on most
evenings) but I cannot while thepodcastnetwork supports this view, or
your podcast remains on this network.
There is no such thing as “Gay Parents.” There are “Parents.” What
does what you do in the bedroom have to do with parenting. Homosexuals
defeat acceptance as “normal” each time they highlight what they do with
their sexuality.
I eagerly await a time when I can once again listen to your show,
Signed: A would be listener.”

How does someone who is so overwhelmed by homosexuality make it through the day? If he or she is “unable” to listen to a Podcast because ANOTHER Podcast on the same network features LGBT content, what else won’t he or she do? Watch network television? Read a newspaper? Go to a bookstore? Surf the web? Just how big a wall does he or she need to build to feel safe?

I always get the impression that people like this are so afraid or angry (or both) that they are barely holding it together. I think in many cases, they are repressing their own urges, and that’s what has them so frightened.

In any case, they want us to be, at best, invisible. At worst: Who knows?

Actually, the writer gave me inspiration for the upcoming Gay Parenting Show Episode 2 (The Gay Empire Strikes Back), which looks at the destructive role homophobia plays in our children’s lives.

On a more positive note, I want to thank The Podcast Network for their ongoing support. They’ve let me know that, despite the haters, The Gay Parenting Show will always have a home here. Much love to the guys at TPN.

Thank you for visiting the Gay Parenting Show. I hope you’ll stay awhile, and listen to my first Podcast.

This week’s show has been a pleasure to produce. First, I got to tell you a little about myself and my family, and you got to hear my wonderful son Sasha’s voice. If you’d like to learn more about my family, and read my other writings for LGBT parents and their kids, be sure to visit my homepage at www.gayparentingpage.com.

I want to send a special thank you to my guests this week. Corri Planck of the Family Pride Coalition (www.familypride.org) visited to tell us about Family Week, their week of fun and celebration for gay families. It’s an amazing, empowering thing to see the streets of Provincetown, MA filled with hundred of gay families. If you possibly can, go. And look for my family there! Family Week runs from July 30th through August 5th.

I was also lucky to have some time with Arlene Istar Lev. Her terrific book, The Complete Lesbian and Gay Parenting Guide, is an incredibly comprehensive resource for those interested in becoming gay parents – or for those of us who’ve already taken the plunge. I urge you to check it out.

Next week, I hope to have more great interviews – with Judith Snow, author of How It Feels to Have a Gay or Lesbian Parent: A Book by Kids for Kids of All Ages , and with digital photography guru Rick Sammon, author of Rick Sammon’s Complete Guide to Digital Photography: 107 Lessons on Taking, Making, Editing, Storing, Printing, and Sharing Better Digital Images. Rick is one of the United States’ most eminent photographers, and he’ll be online to tell us how to take better pictures of our kids – something every parent I know wants to learn.

Before you go, please feel free to leave me some feedback. I’d love to know you’re out there - I certainly am!

Thanks again for visiting, and thanks also to The Podcast Network, for taking a gamble with this show.

Till next time,
