The Gay Parenting Show #28: Back to School Episode with Aimee Gelnaw (MP3 –18MB –52min)

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

September 28, 2006: It’s Back to School Time, and tireless advocate, educator and activist Aimee Gelnaw is on to tell you about her new curriculum for teaching early educators how to talk about diverse families with pre-schoolers and young-schoolers. Aimee and her partners are doing incredible work helping prepare the next generation of teachers for making schools more welcoming places for all kinds of families, including our own.

I also talk about how my son is adjusting to school. Better than I adjusted to my first PTA meeting, I can tell you that much!

In news, we talk about why I think how the mainstream media’s careless quoting of right-wing so-called “experts” on LGBT adoption hurts our families, and how Arnold Schwartenegger refused to sign a bill that would have prevented kids from getting beat up. Because, suddenly, protecting children is controversial.

Thanks to HRC for their sponsorship and thanks to you for listening.

Hi there Scott! Thought you might be interested in what I’ve been trying to do to help give educators in Canada options for inclusion of alternative families and lifestyles. I’ve self-published three diversity-friendly titles that are aimed at children ages 3-6 years. Ryan’s Mom is Tall is a comparative opposites picture book which features lesbian Moms, Monicka’s Papa is Tall (gay version of the same style of book), and The Not-So-Only Child which features bi-racial families, gay Moms, Grandmothers and Dads. I have just done an interview with Just One More Book a podcast out of Ottawa, Ontario that might interest you.

I don’t know how old your son is now, but he might find the books interesting and if you’d like I could send you promotional copies. I’m trying my best to get copies of the books to LGBT organizations, hospitals, hospices, and midwives collectives so that alternative families can have further reading options for their kids.

    Keep up your GREAT work!
