Gay Adoptions OK in OK

May 20, 2006:  In a ruling that actually puts the welfare of children before the prejudices of right-wing nutbjobs, a federal judge in Oklahoma has struck down a 2-year-old law that prohibits the state from recognizing LGBT adoptions that were completed in other states or countries. According to the AP, the Solomon-like judge said that the measure violated due process rights under the U.S. Constitution because it attempted to break up families without considering the parents’ fitness or the children’s best interests.

LGBT people have Lambda Legal to thank for the work that led to victory for these families.

“Gay and lesbian parents in Oklahoma can now breathe a collective sigh of relief because their relationships with their children are no longer threatened by the state of Oklahoma,” said Ken Upton, an attorney in Lambda Legal’s Dallas office.

Republican Rep. Thad Balkman, whose own fears and prejudices make him want to take children away from their parents, bemoaned “it’s another case of an activist court trying to legislate from the bench.”

In other words, if he wants to write laws that blatantly discriminate against law-abiding Amercians and break up loving famlies, how dare someone use the US Constitution to stop him? It’s his right as an American to force his ugly beliefs on innocent children, isn’t it?
