Should Republicans Be Allowed to Adopt?

February 25, 2006: In a response to legislation that seeks to ban LGBT people from adopting, a Democratic State Senator is seeking to ban another class of people from building their families. This is from 365Gay.com:

An Ohio Democrat is proposing legislation that would prevent Republicans from adopting children, a move aimed at embarrassing the GOP over moves to block gay adoptions.

State Sen. Robert Hagan (D-Youngstown) admits his bill is purely “tongue-in-cheek” but says that the message is anything but a joke.

In an email sent to fellow legislators, and obtained by Knight Ridder Newspapers, Hagan says he’s looking for co-sponsors to “introduce legislation in the near future that would ban households with one or more Republican voters from adopting children or acting as foster parents.”

Earlier this month a bill to ban gays, bisexuals, and transgenderds from adopting was proposed by 10 far-right Republicans. It was introduced in the House this month by state Rep. Ron Hood (R-Ashville)

“We need to see what we are doing,” said Hagan, who called Hood’s proposed bill blatantly discriminatory and “homophobic.”

When Hood introduced his gay adoption ban he said that, “Studies have shown that the optimal setting to raise children in is a traditional setting with a mom and a dad.”

Hood claims that children raised in gay households are at “increased risk” of physical and emotional problem.

In Hagan’s email to fellow lawmaker’s he skewers Hood’s assertions, offering his own “credible research” shows that adopted children raised in Republican households are more at risk for developing “emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities.”

Hagan knows his mock bill has no chance of getting to the floor for a vote let alone passing.  And, Hood’s bill appears to be headed for a similar fate

this is about the gay adoptions. Oh My Gosh how disgusting is this? Think about it, no child wants their parents to be gay! but they have no choice, and children who want both a mommy and a daddy end up with 2 moms or 2 dads. These kids deserve a normal, healthy home. And gays just simply cant provide that. These children are going to be judged according to their parents orentation, they’ll make no friends, and it’s going to be really hard for a child to have a relationship with someone. Also if the parernts are gay, theres a greater chance the child will be gay too. I mean they’re going to be taught that it’s ok to be gay, and i know we all agree that it’s NOT ok. And what if a pair of gay men adopt a girl, she will have no woman in her life. She needs a woman to talk to and to teach her about things. And no matter how much a gay man acts like a woman, hes not! And lets say a pair or lesbian women adopt a boy. That child will have no male role model in his life. A child needs an older role model of the same sex in the family.Gay adoptions are cruel , not to mention gross, and mean, and theres no way a gay adoption is in the best interest of the child. People may argue that being gay is in genetics, but being gay is a CHOICE, the person has a choice to be gay or straight. Orientation is NOT inheritated, it’s a choice. and I CAN prove it.

    Chelsea,

    OK, Prove it.

    Still waiting for proof

    Chelsea,

Just because there parents are gay doesn’t mean the child is going to be that way. If you had to put a child up for adoption would you rather your child go to a crack house or to a gay family. From experience, gay people are the most loving and respectful people. as long as the child is loved and is healthy it shouldn’t matter if they are homosexual. A boy is growing up with two moms then he will be sensitive and understand women and have more respect for them. well my opinion is if the child is loved it shouldn’t matter who the parents are!

p.s. still wating on that proof!

i think that its ok forgays to adopt children and i agree with chelsea i would want a child to go to a gay family instead of a crack house

Just because you’re gay does not mean you are unfit to be a parent. There are many stable, commited, willing gay parents who want to become parents too. Who are we to deny them that right? Also, there are so many foster children who wish to have a stable, loving , and nurturing home. We are only hurting these children by limiting the pool of qualified adoptive parents. Being a good parent is not affected by your sexual orientation. A gay home is better than no home at all!
