Utah and Washington, I Wish I Could Quit You
February 10, 2006: I’ve avoided writing about Brokeback Mountain (loved it, loved it, loved it!) but I can’t resist pointing this out from 365Gay.com:
The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday banned “Brokeback Mountain” and other nations in the region are expected to follow. China’s censor’s banned it last month. In Malaysia the country’s largest distributor has said it would not even ask for approval to release the film in the mostly Muslim country.
The film also has been dropped from playbills at theaters in Utah and the state of Washington.
This raises so many questions for me. How can it be that two states in this country are siding with the United Arab Emirates, China and Malaysia on censorship and human rights? Can’t they just put the movie in theaters and let people who want to see it go, while people who chose not to don’t? Isn’t this still America? Just how much do these people hate us, anyway? Are they proud of the attitudes they share with these famously repressive regimes? Just wondering.
