The Gay Parenting Show #16 -Talking With Your Children About Homosexuality
The Gay Parenting Show # 16 – Talking with Your Kids about Homosexuality (MP3 – 14MB – 40min)
January 15, 2006: Today’s show features a terrific interview with Dr. Kim Bergman about how to talk to your kids about homosexuality.
It’s your responsibility to help form your child’s sense of him or herself and his or her family. What have you told your kids about his or her family? And how has your unconscious internalized homophobia been communicated to your child?
On today’s show, Dr. Kim Bergman of Growing Generations tells us how to communicate the beautiful truth of your family to your children. As she explains, we don’t freak out when our kids say they want a pony. So why do we panic when they say they want a mom (or a dad)?
Listen up and hear Dr. Bergman’s excellent advice.
Also, I talk about my family, including an update on our foster child and my son’s exciting half-birthday.
And, as always, we cover the news of the day as it affects gay famlies.
Thanks for listening, and please leave feedback and let me know what you think.

Hi Scott,
I came across your site today via Family Pride’s E-newsletter.
It looks (and sounds!) like you are doing some really cool work here, and covering your own parenting journey with courage and honesty. (You might remember that we both wrote “My Turn” pieces about queer families for Newsweek in the same year.) Thanks for being out there, and continuing to speak up.

Hi, I came across your podcast today and I absolutely love it! I’ve been listening to episodes 10-16 the entire day. :)
I’m not a parent yet but I’ve been learning about adoption and I’m getting ready to take the next steps.
I’m finding your show incredibly insightful and truly valuable.
I loved the interview with Kim and how she suggested handling the “I wish I had a daddy” or “I wish I had a mommy” statement we may hear from our kids. I think it saved me years of heartache just by listening to those few minutes.
Thank you for this show and I wish you and your family the best. You’re truly providing a wonderful service!

I just finished linking your page to the Flint Hills PFLAG page. I was able to download three shows from ITUNES but couldn’t figure out how to download the others to ITUNES or save them in MP3 format.
My husband and I had both our sons through AID. They are wonderful young me. We went through this journey without much help in the late ’70s and early
80s. When they were 8 &4 we journeyed into unknown territory by telling them about their donors. One has met his donor but the other just got information that his donor is deceased. IT is rough having two different donors and I wish we had had the option of using the same donor for them. Thanks for your shows on Gay Parenting and the AI show also. Not much out there on that. Taz
