The Gay Parenting Show #012 - Building Your Family through Foster Care and Surrogacy
The Gay Parenting Show # 12 – Building Your Family through Foster Care and Surrogacy (MP3 – 14.5MB - 42min)
November 14, 2005: Interested in having kids? The theme of today’s show is how to add to your family through surrogacy and foster care; two of the many options open to LGBT parents.
First, I talk about my family’s recent experience with foster care. We started the process a few weeks ago, and we already have a child in our home.
We had a lot of fears about foster care before we entered the system. Would it take forever? Is it a bureaucratic nightmare? Are the kids alright? You’ll find out how the realities compare to the stereotypes in the first half of today’s show.
In the second half, we talk to Will Halm, co-found of Growing Generations, the largest surrogacy agency in the world. Will has helped hundreds of LGBT people become parents.
Surrogacy is a misunderstood process, and I learned a lot talking to Will. Listen and see if surrogacy might be for you.
Thanks as always to Motorola for their sponsorship and to Skylook for the software I use to record my interviews.
And thanks especially to you. Please be sure to send me or post your feedback. Enjoy the show!

Just wanted to say that although I didn’t listen to your show regarding surrogacy, that I’m glad to know that you breached the subject. My partner and I have a daugther thanks to an amazing surrogate so I’m always happy to hear that people are exploring surrogacy as a viable option.
Thanks!

Mike, thanks so much for taking the time to write. I’m always curious to know what people are interested in hearing about, so this feedback is helpful. Congratulations on your daughter!

What a fantastic subject you tackled in this edition Scott. The misconceptions you shattered about foster care were fascinating to hear and learning of your own relative ease into the system was encouraging.
Surrogacy is an amazing advance for all couples wanting a biological child of at least one of the parents, the possibilities there are endless. Of course, it too raises so much anxiety with all the stories we have heard throughout the years of legal battles and broken hearts associated with such advances but luckily many of those situations have been resolved with stricter laws to protect all parties involved.
Again it was a great show and so informative
Good luck with your foster child,
Heidi

Scott,
Your interview on the subject of surrogacy complements the shows you have done recently on adoption and foster care as ways to bring a child into your life. Thanks again for making this information available to those considering building a family. It’s a shame that there are people who would deny a child a loving home rather than amend their limited vision of what a family should be. Keep up the excellent podcasting that you do !
