LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

August 28, 2005: Hi, and welcome to the seventh episode of The Gay Parenting Show.

Today, I talk about an important court ruling in California that ensured that gay parents have not just the same rights, but the same responsibilities, as straight parents.

I also give out information about the 2005 Pride and Joy Conference to be held November 11-13 in Binghamton, NY. The conference features workshops for parents and prospective parents, creative children’s programs for ages 6 mos. and up, a resource fair, off-site family outings and entertainment and a Family Dance. It sounds like a great event.

Lastly, I talk with my old friend, Michael Rogers. Mike runs PageOneQ News, a fantastic LGBT resource on the web. PageOneQ is a news aggregator and everyday Michael posts summaries and links to the world’s top stories that affect LGBT people and their families.

Michael and I talk about Focus on Your Child, a subgroup of the right-wing religious group Focus on the Family. FOYC publishes lists of advice for parents who are worried about their artistic, sensitive sons or athletic, adventurous daughters. Could these children be headed for (insert dramatic pause) homosexuality? According to FOYC, you bet your sweet ass they are!

But luckily, FOYC is there with the tips and tools to turn your child back to the path of heterosexuality. Or, as FOYC so charmingly puts it on one of their web pages: “Helping Boys Become Men, and Girls Become Women - How to Prevent Homosexuality.”

According those these wackos “growing up straight isn’t something that happens. It requires good parenting. It requires societal support. And it takes time.” Who knew heterosexuality had to be taught? (As Michael suggests on this week’s show, we must have been absent when those lessons were covered in school.)

These people want parents to pervert their children’s natural instincts to conform to their conservative ideas of “appropriate” behavior. If your little girl wants to play with toy soldiers - take her to a “counselor.” If your little boy likes to play dress up - wrestle with him to toughen him up. These people are sick. Come listen as Michael and I dissect their attacks on children.

    Scott,
I enjoyed your discussion with Michael Rodgers from PageOneQ concerning Focus
on the Familys’ crazy advice to parents to watch out for their childrens non standard gender roles. That these people would narrow the acceptable behavior of childrens’ nature is sick and proves there people are extemely repressed. I did check out Michael’s website PageOneQ and found it to be very informative. I have both of your sites as bookmarks. Again, thanks for an interesting and thought provoking Podcast !
