Lets Stop the Meanness!
August 26, 2005: A prominent Republican has come out favoring some sort of legal recognition for our families. This is from The Southern Voice.
“Retired U.S. Sen. John C. Danforth made clear Thursday that while he agrees that marriage is only between a man and a woman, there should not be a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.”
“It’s nothing more than gay bashing. There’s no other reason for it,” Danforth said, as he addressed members of the local Log Cabin Republicans.
Later in his remarks, Danforth said “Meanness is wrong,” as he called on all Republicans to speak out about the dangers of “gay bashing” and other divisive behavior.
Well, he’s not quite where we’d want him to be in terms of ending marriage discrimination, but Danforth demonstrates that conservatives can show decency and fairness in this debate. And I’m all about ending the “meanness.”
