The Gay Parenting Show #005

The Gay Parenting Show #005 (MP3 15.9MB 45:20 min)
LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

Today’s show has a great interview with Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry. Freedom to Marry is the nation’s only gay and non-gay partnership exclusively working to win marriage equality nationwide. This is an interview that every LGBT person should hear, but it’s especially important for us those of us who want our children to grow up in a country where their own parents aren’t discriminated against.

The fight for equality in marriage is a defining moment in American history. As Evan says in this interview “it is the vehicle for having an important discussion with Americans that humanizes us and our lives, that makes our lives equal, that moves them to support our need to end discrimination. That why even before we win marriage, in the struggle to win marriage, we reap other gains along the way, because it is such a powerful and resonant vocabulary.” (I paraphrased a little there, but you get the point).

Evan tells you why equal marriage rights are so important to your and your family, and what you can do to move the ball forward.

This interview will give you a new way to think about “gay marriage.” In fact, when I use that term, Evan gently chides me. “We have to stop calling it ‘gay marriage.’ We’re not after ‘gay marriage,’ we’re after an end to discrimination in marriage. We don’t say we’re fighting for ‘gay employment’ or ‘gay housing.’ We say we’re fighting for the same opportunities to make choices in regard to employment, or in regard to housing, or in regard to participation in society, and that ought to be true in regard to the freedom to marry as well.”

Evan and I also discuss the recent poll from the Pew Research Center that found that public support for equal marriage rights and civil unions has increased to an all-time high (see my previous post for more about the poll).

Evan is a brilliant guy who is doing amazing work. I’m honored to have him as a friend and as a guest on my show. Be sure to check out his book Why Marriage Matters : America, Equality, and Gay People’s Right to Marry.

On a lighter note, today’s show looks at gay swans in Massachusetts, conservative protests over – get this – pro-gay coffee cups, and my anxiety as my son gets ready to go to kindergarten.

Today’s Action Alert asks you to contact Starbucks and support them for their brave portrayals of those queer coffee cups.

    Scott,
I posted my comment against the wrong Podcast, Podcast #1. I am resubmitting it under Podcast #5, the one it was intended for.

I just listened to your Podcast #5, and was impressed with your guest,
Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry. I work for a Fortune 100 company, a component of the Dow Jones index, that still does not provide domestic partner benefits. Even though I am a registered domestic partner in California, and have applied for benefits as such, my employer turned me down since it is their policy only to provide health and dental benefits to married employees. Since CA does not legally offer marriage rights to GLBT citizens this means my partner is excluded from the same benefits that my straight, married co-workers enjoy.
I was impressed by his suggestion of engaging our fair minded straight friends, and well as your point that being outed by your kids provides an opportunity for neighbors to see you as a caring, loving, and healthy family unit.
Keep up the good work !
